As I do every four years and every year and constantly, I've been trying to sort out my political views lately. When I boil it all down, the federal government seems to be responsible for just two things: (1) Protecting and respecting the sanctity of human life and (2) Developing and maintaining essential interstate infrastructures.
Protecting and respecting the sanctity of human life
This is just as simple and politically unsavory as it sounds: the government is responsible for protecting and respecting the sanctity of human life from conception to death. That means abortions are as wrong as murders are as wrong as executions are as wrong as war. That means proper health care must be a right to all citizens.
Developing and maintaining essential interstate infrastructures
The federal government creates jobs by developing and maintaining essential interstate infrastructures, such as the interstate highway system. The federal government is not responsible for spending money on state and local projects, schools, bombs, welfare--you get the idea. The projects that clearly are under federal jurisdiction (including health care) can be paid for with a simple tax on consumer spending.
There. Now, go find me a matching presidential candidate (oh, that reminds me: it's only reasonable that our government officials be elected by instant run-off voting).

Yay instant run off voting!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were able to organize your views into such succinct categories. We don't necessarily agree, but I can see your point of view. Hey! Who'd a thunk that??
I wish I had two cents to share, but I'm not 100% sure where to stick my finger nor am I sure that it'll come out clean after I decide.
